  • SIMILAR SUNDAYS

I have so many lookalike covers in my mind so I will keep writing about them for a while!

I Did It For Us by Alison Bruce vs Bitter by Francesca Jakobi

This two covers may not be identical, but I’ve stumbled upon them one after another recently and they reminded each other to me. I have seen Bitter recently on NetGalley and I Did it For Us in Waterstones. Here are the blurbs:

I Did It For Us:

Cherry’s instincts tell her that best friend Joanne’s new boyfriend is bad news. Cherry fears for Joanne. Fears for Joanne’s children. But Joanne won’t listen because she’s in love. So Cherry watches, and waits . . . and then she makes a choice. But Cherry has a past, and secrets too. And is she really as good a friend to Joanne as she claims?

Bitter:

It’s 1969, and while the summer of love lingers in London, Gilda is consumed by the mistakes of her past. She walked out on her beloved son Reuben when he was just a boy and fears he’ll never forgive her. When Reuben marries a petite blonde gentile, Gilda takes it as the ultimate rejection. Her cold, distant son seems transformed by love – a love she’s craved his entire adult life. What does his new wife have that she doesn’t? And how far will she go to find out? It’s an obsession that will bring shocking truths about the past to light . . .

Verdict:

Both book covers look good, they use the same trick however Bitter has better finish. I like the details I can see from the woman’s face although I cannot tell if she is young or old (Gilda or the petite blonde?) I think same can be said about the book blurbs as well! I Did It For Us’s blurb is very simple, Bitter sounds more intriguing.

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves vs All Our Wrong Todays

We are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler  and All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai not only have resembling covers, but also interestingly parallel names. Both book covers look stunning! WAACBO is in my TBR list and I have been wondering about it for a while, only scared to be left heartbroken after reading it. (As I have been told there were LOTS of tears shed whilst reading it) So if I read it, feel free to advise me!

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves

Rosemary’s young, just at college, and she’s decided not to tell anyone a thing about her family. So we’re not going to tell you too much either: you’ll have to find out for yourselves, round about page 77, what it is that makes her unhappy family unlike any other. Rosemary is now an only child, but she used to have a sister the same age as her, and an older brother. Both are now gone – vanished from her life. There’s something unique about Rosemary’s sister, Fern. And it was this decision, made by her parents, to give Rosemary a sister like no other, that began all of Rosemary’s trouble. So now she’s telling her story: full of hilarious asides and brilliantly spiky lines, it’s a looping narrative that begins towards the end, and then goes back to the beginning. Twice. It’s funny, clever, intimate, honest, analytical and swirling with ideas that will come back to bite you. We hope you enjoy it, and if, when you’re telling a friend about it, you do decide to spill the beans about Fern – it’s pretty hard to resist – don’t worry. One of the few studies Rosemary doesn’t quote says that spoilers actually enhance reading.

All Our Wrong Todays

This is a love story that could only happen because of a time-travel accident. In it we meet Tom and Penny, who belong to a world so perfect there’s no war, no poverty, no under-ripe avocados. But when something awful happens to Penny and Tom tries to make it right – you guessed it, with time travel – he accidentally destroys everything and wakes up in our broken, mixed-up world. Only here, Penny and Tom have a second chance. Should he try to fix everything and go back to his brilliant, but loveless world, or remain in our messy, complicated one and take a chance on being happy with Penny

Verdict:

Wow! Both blurbs are SO interesting. I have added All Our Wrong Todays to my TBR, but I think We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves has an incredibly clever blurb that instantly won me. But I think I like All Our Wrong Todays cover better! They are both looking very good though, it just the colours won me 🙂

Guilty Wife vs Angel

These two might be the most identical covers I have ever seen. My nose smells domestic DRAMA! Let’s see the blurbs!

The Guilty Wife by Elle Croft:

If you were being framed for murder, how far would you go to clear your name? The debut psychological thriller that reads as Apple Tree Yardmeets Behind Closed Doors, by way of Double Jeopardy.

I’m not guilty of murder.

Bethany Reston is happily married. But she’s also having an affair with a famous client.
And no one can ever know.

But that doesn’t make me innocent.

When Bethany’s lover is brutally murdered, she has to hide her grief from everyone.
But someone knows her secret. And then one day the threats begin.

With an ever-growing pile of evidence pointing to her as the murderer, the only way she can protect her secrets is to prove her innocence. And that means tracking down a killer.

The Angel by Katerina Diamond

When a burned body is found in a disused signal box, suspicion falls on lonely teenager Gabriel Webb. There’s no doubt he was at the scene of the crime, but does he really deserve what awaits him in prison?

DS Imogen Grey is certain there’s more to the case than meets the eye. But while she struggles to convince those around her of the truth, her partner DS Adrian Miles is distracted by his own demons.

When a brutal double murder is reported, their investigation is stopped in its tracks. Is the body in the box even who they thought it was? The duo realise Gabriel might have been locked up for a crime he didn’t commit. But with enemies watching Gabriel’s every move, they may be too late.

Verdict:

I think I like the Guilty Wife blurb better. I have a soft spot even for thriller&suspense novels. They are easy reads, most of them being page turners.

The covers are SO similar, hard to decide which one looks better. But I think The Angel wins with the darker cover!

Hope you enjoyed reading this. Let me know if you read or TBR’d any of these books!

  1. I think it goes to show how so many ideas have already been used but everyone has their own take on it. While they’re similar they aren’t the same and they can convey different ideas through the way the imagery is set up.
