The Binding by Bridget Collins :
Yay or Nay? : Sadly, Nay.
The Binding was one of the most anticipated releases for me, and I am disappointed to say it ended up in did-not-finish-pile at 40% of the book. I’ve just gave up and looked what happens in the end guys.
The book is about a young Book Binder, Emmett, who moves to live with a master book binder, and old woman. The book binding business soon proves to be “more than it seems” however the book then takes another turn to be a really slow paced romance. Here I must say, I am being specifically vague to not to give any spoilers as the whole story might be told in three sentences. I think my main problem with the book was that by the book description, I was thinking I would read a story full of magic and secrets, however it ended up a really slow paced story with the plot revealing everything up around 30%, leaving nothing else for my liking to venture forth to. Also please allow me to warn you that the book has some trigger warnings, nothing too graphic however very sad, if you’re a really sensitive reader.
So sadly, a DNF for me, but if you’re into historical novels with a hint of mystery and magic, with romance in, why not, you might try.
Thanks for Borough Press for this copy.
An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendrick & Sarah Pekkanen
Yay or Nay? : Nay.
You know Mystery Thrillers are my sweet tooth in Literature. I really liked Pekkanen & Hendricks’s first book, The Wife Between Us as it was fast and page turning. This book however, although the fast start, has been a bit slow to read for me. At one point I felt I wasn’t really interested to find out the reveal, or what’s going on.
It’s a shame, really as the characters were interesting to start, but I think everything was too vague, and too mysterious, and the more I read, the more I got lost & lost my attention. The ending was OK-ish however I felt like this book was written after some subjects of last 2 years became really popular (can’t say which subjects, sorry, would be spoiler)
Damn, it really sounds like babbling when you try to talk about why you didn’t like a book without spoilers. So, I didn’t like it but try if you like slow burning domestic thrillers.
Thanks for Pan Macmillan for the copy
Yay or Nay? : For me a nay, but YAY for you if you can handle though subjects, gore and abuse. It’s really a well written book that’ll make you forget where you are.
I loved the TV show, The Killing. When I spotted that the screen writer of Killing wrote his first novel I just couldn’t help requesting it. Although I had a slight uneasy feeling because of the cover, but I said to myself, f** it, maybe it doesn’t have trigger warnings.
Hey, but it did. So If you’re a sensitive reader, I wouldn’t recommend this book. However if you can stomach difficult things, this is the perfect book for you. It’s just so well written, until I hit the wall in the book I forgot where I was, deeply diving into the beautiful plot, building tension and I don’t know how I turned the pages. Although I have seen in this book things I wish I hadn’t read, I went until the end, because it’s so well written, but I wish someone warned me about the contents of the book, honestly I want to forget it all.
Thanks for Michael Joseph and Netgalley for a copy of the book.
